Comfort food – Irish tradition

Sherry Zeise

A joyous, festive spirit filled the home of hostess Sandra Anderson as she welcomed the rest of the members of New Life Church Ladies’ Lunch Bunch on March 11. Though not a member of our church, Sandy has been a beloved Lunch Bunch member through the years, and we were honored to have her host our event.

March meeting always sports the “Wearin’ o’ the Green,” and in good old Irish tradition we enjoy Jois Ross’ awesome corned beef and cabbage while we bring accompanying dishes and desserts that are green: salad, cucumbers, key lime pie, pistachio pudding. However, anything, no matter the color, that’s made by these great cooks is always welcomed and enjoyed.

Though the wonderful meal and fellowship brings great pleasure, the delight of the day comes after as the ladies break out the song books to enjoy a glorious hymn-sing. Our hostess, Sandy, accompanied us filling the house with her beautiful playing, and Sherry Zeise led the group in singing. Though she enjoyed the best part of the sing-in, she didn’t choose the songs; each lady got to have us sing her favorite! One by one as Jois called her name, the lady called out the page number and then glorious, spirited, meaningful words and song filled the room. Midway through the program Sherry sang My Tribute at the request of our hostess. More awesome songs and singing continued until all had opportunity to hear and sing her song.

Finally, as tradition dictates, we always close with the beloved Amazing Grace.

As we gathered our things to leave the consensus was, “It was too short!” and “We should do this more often!”
