Designing with Carol

My view of Monet’s garden

My view of Monet’s garden

Carol Collins, WFCP, Expert

Claude Monet (1840-1926) was not only a leading impressionist painter, but also a master interior decorator. In his own home in Giverny, France, he chose to color his rooms in vibrant and innovative hues. I had the pleasure of visiting Monet’s home and gardens in 2013. As the song lyric says, “I could have danced all night,” well I surely could have stayed all week and absorbed the beauty of color and design displayed in his home as well as his gardens.

I think as far as his home we are most familiar with his blue and white tiled kitchen with dozens of copper pots and pans hanging on the walls. But other rooms are just as breathtaking: the sunflower yellow dining room, the pink master bedroom and the green shutters adorning the outside.

In every room of the Monet home hang his beautiful paintings including those of his gardens. Again, beaming with color in the impressionist style. And the painting of the Japanese bridge? Yes, I got to see the painting as well as walk on the famous bridge itself. The trip was indeed a trip to remember.

We may not be able or desire to be as bold as Monet, but we can certainly be inspired by his designs to bring a little color and cheer to our own décor.
