Designing With Carol

Character in any room

Each one of your rooms should be a reflection of you and your lifestyle. At the same time, each room should have its own character, interest and function.

Let’s start in the bedroom. The bed is generally the center point of the room. Dress it with linens that bring out the style you love. Sitting chairs add a place to sit and read, meditate or just relax. Bedside tables function as a landing for your essentials for the evening as well as lighting for the mood. Finish off the room with a special interest – add a bench to the foot of the bed.

Moving into the great room, create interest and function with the perfect coffee table. This little (or large) piece of furniture serves so many functions and can be the focal point of the room. Choose from wood, metal or even stone to compliment the other furnishings in your room. Choose a table large enough to serve the functions you want to use it for.

The kitchen is another room that should have loads of character. So many of us have themed kitchens, filled with décor that make us smile while we are preparing the meals of the day. I’ve seen everything from roosters to flowers, collectible dishes to assorted baskets. Have fun in choosing something that makes you happy.

The dining room is generally a more formal area that we don’t necessarily want to overload with décor. The table, the buffet and sideboard are generally enough to give the room its formal flare. If you have a glass front china cabinet, fill it with your heirloom china or wedding china. Add a centerpiece to the table and you have a beautiful, formal and functional room.

The guest room should be welcoming yet functional for your guests. Have at least one dresser where your guests can place their clothes for their stay. A bedside table is vital in giving them a place to put their necessary items such as glasses, telephone and a glass of water. If there is room, a nice, comfortable chair is a great place for your guests to escape to read or write a note.

The bathrooms are a place that we do not want to overlook. We also don’t want to overload the area with “cutesy” items. There just isn’t enough room. Hopefully you have enough room for a chair or bench. This can actually be your focal point. So, make it decorative as well as functional.

Let your creative juices flow as you think about how you can best decorate your room with style that is both beautiful and functional.
