Don’t worry, be hippie at summer of love dance party

Forty odd years after the 1960s counterculture revolution, we’re still ready to get our groove on. We amped up the flower power, threw up a few peace signs and partied with all our free-loving, hippie friends at the Dance Club’s “Summer of Love Dance Party” on the night of July 27.

Although it wasn’t a return to Woodstock, no doubt we stepped back in time with the ballroom decorated in tie-dye, peace symbols, daisies, VW buses, and images of the most easily recognizable characters in American culture – the beloved hippie. Dance party goers were decked out in love beads, headbands, granny glasses, tie-dyed shirts, bell bottom jeans, mini-skirts, go-go boots, and everything in-between.

And just as dancing was the “it” thing to do in the ’60s, we took to the dance floor to music from DJ Joel Morris and channeled our inner flower child while dancing the Twist, the Pony, the Monkey, and the Loco-motion. And to everyone’s delight, Bert Zeitlin (line dance instructor) taught a circle dance to Get Together, a song by the Youngbloods which peaked to number five on the Billboard charts in 1969.

And then there were those great door prizes generously donated by our wonderful sponsors Nothing Bundt Cakes, Henry Evans (dance instructor), Berger Dental, Mad World Records, Tex Tapas Restaurant and The Snooty Pig. The lucky winners were Marilyn Melo, Elizabeth Gage, Jan Angus, Nancy Kipp and John Hall.

It was a night filled with memories and dancing. But the fun doesn’t stop; remember to mark your calendar for the next dance, “Denim and Diamonds” set for September 28 with live music from Diva G and High Maintenance.
