Been to Sidewalk Café at Unicorn Lake, across from Cinemark? If Mick Jagger had gone, he would never have sung his famous song! That’s where New Life Church Ladies’ Lunch Bunch had their May meeting, a Mother’s Day Banquet, on Saturday, May 14. Susi Pyeatt, co-owner of Sidewalk Café and Madeline Meyer, our server and Oklahoma University graduate, gave each of us the excellent, personal service for which they are known, and for which we were truly appreciative.

Thirty-eight ladies filled the room with happy chatter and anticipation. Each member proudly introduced her daughter, granddaughter, friend, and then we enjoyed a delicious, generous buffet with turkey and chicken salad sandwiches, fruit salad and Sidewalk Café’s wonderful garden salad with choice of three dressings. That could only be eclipsed by the remarkable desserts: carrot cake, unique petit fours, huge, scrumptious cookies, and Sidewalk Café’s version of strawberry shortcake.

Jois Ross, director, and her awesome team: Ruth Klein, Nancy Thomas, Peggy Zilinsky, and Nancy Nevius presented a well-rounded, inspiring and fun program.

First of all, special music, sung by Sherry Zeise and accompanied on the keyboard by gifted pianist and music educator, Carmen Bello. Songs included “Crazy,” favorite Patsy Cline tune, and “I Wish You Love.” Jois shared a reading of “The Family Album,” recalling memories of Mom and days long ago. Nancy Nevius, game hostess, got us started with a Bingo game with various life experiences we checked-off to find a winner, such as, “I’ve baked homemade bread, I’ve participated in a mission trip, I know how to play a musical instrument, I’ve gotten a speeding ticket,” showing the varied experience and interesting lives of our awesome ladies. Then she challenged our recollection of events and fads from our younger days with a multiple choice quiz. It had been a while since thinking of Twiggy, Hula Hoops, 1954 and movies from that era.

Peggy Zilinsky made us aware of the value of each member and special connections God has made with every lady there, by having us draw names of a member we did not know well. We were to contact her, and then find at least one thing we did not know about that person, and, most of all, to establish a new friendship.

Sherry and Carmen shared the touching song, “The Rose,” and then Nancy Thomas closed the meeting with a poem in prayer, a blessing for Mothers, from “The Family Album.”

Several won prizes for right answers and drawings. As a table favor, each lady received a copy of a lovely poem, “Mother’s Love.” All of us left with memories of treasured moments during our time together, along with genuine gratitude for having and being a Mother.
