Tuesday, July 19, brought good friends together at the home of Mike and Susan Miloser. The theme of the evening was the tasting of wines from South Africa. There were four wines to choose from, and the results were as follows:

Our fourth place was a 2013 Neethlingshof Estates Cabernet Sauvignon brought by Bob Jones. This wine was a full bodied, classic dry red wine with vanilla-oak and ripe black current aromas with a good lingering finish.

Number three was a 2012 Flippenice (because it’s so “flippen nice”) from Tulbagh Winery brought by Cindy Stampf. It was a good structured wine with notes of dark red berry fruit with well integrated oak and soft tannins.

The second place wine was a 2013 Spier Vintage Selection Pinotage brought by Frank and Nancy Freisheim. Pinotage is South Africa’s signature grape variety and grown almost exclusively there. This wine offers a deep, ruby red color with flavors of cherry, tobacco and complex layers of berry fruit complemented by integrated oak flavors from barrel maturation. It’s a rich wine to serve with lamb, venison and rich pasta.

And our winner for the night was a 2015 Rib Shack Red Vintage Blend brought by Cindy Sterling. This wine was a blend of 60% Pinotage and 40% Shiraz. It was medium ruby in color with aromas of smoke, black cherry and roasted red pepper; medium bodied and dry, with flavors of cassis, smoke, vanilla and pepper. Perfect for a summer BBQ!
