A preview of the upcoming 86th legislative session

The holidays are here and there is little time for rest before the 86th Texas Legislature convenes on January 8, 2019.

As I prepare to enter my second term as the State Representative of House District 64, I look forward to continuing to be a champion for my constituents and all Texans. While a few changes are expected in the next session there are some key issues that are making a return.

One thing that doesn’t change is the budget process. The legislature is constitutionally mandated to pass a budget to fund state operations for the next two years. Of all the issues, passing a budget that includes funding for public schools and public universities sits at the center of responsible governance. But there is plenty more on our plates.

For most Texans, the top priority is property tax relief and school finance reform. Without a doubt, these two issues are the highest priority for your legislature. However, we also will be looking into bolstering TRS-Care and continuing to strengthen the state’s policies on border security and illegal immigration.

New to the session will be the election of a Speaker of the House. Outgoing-speaker Joe Straus announced last year that he would not seek re-election. State Rep. Dennis Bonnen (R-Angleton) is the presumed favorite after being unanimously selected by the Texas House Republican Caucus, as well as securing bi-partisan support for his candidacy. I look forward to working with the new speaker to continue to deliver results for the folks in Denton County.

Of course, the most important part of the session is engaging with our constituents on the issues they believe are a top priority. I welcome you to stop by my Capitol Office (E2.410) during session to visit with me and my staff. If making the trip to Austin is not feasible, then I encourage you to stop by my district office. And, of course, you may email me regarding your support or opposition to topics at any time.
