Alice Uyeda – Legacy of a smile

Alice Uyeda: her smile cost nothing but gave much

Alice Uyeda: her smile cost nothing but gave much

Susan Galbraith

Alice Uyeda is remembered as having a lovely smile for all she met. Individual Kiwanis Club members donated funds in memory of our beloved member who worked on many club projects, always with a smile. In Alice’s memory, $1,500 was given to Operation Smile through the Kiwanis Foundation so six children can have the opportunity to know the benefit of a smile like Alice’s.

Kiwanis International and others support the work of Operation Smile, which travels to underdeveloped countries. Here the doctors and staff donate skill and equipment to operate on needy children with cleft palates and train local medical people to care for the children. Correcting deformed facial structure gives these children freedom from ridicule and a smile to enrich their life with possibilities that might otherwise be denied.

May Alice’s service to others and her open heart to all be remembered when you see a child smile. “A smile takes but a moment, but the memory of it lasts forever.” You too can put a smile on the face of others by joining Kiwanis Club on the first and third Fridays of each month at 8:30 a.m. in the clubhouse or by contacting Jim Galbraith at [email protected].
