The June Men’s Health program, “For Your Eyes Only,” was attended by 40 men who learned more about the two top causes of death for men of all ages. Rev. Dr. Gerald Jones, a Robson Ranch resident, moderated the event. According to the Center for Disease Control and the American Cancer Society, leading the list of disorders are heart disease and cancer, respectively.

Dr. Daniel Caldwell’s presentation was an awakening for men to take seriously the choices they make in diet, exercise and lifestyle activities. Accentuated were the importance of seeking medical advice, taking medications accurately and following up with recommendations. Some diagnoses of heart diseases include atrial fibrillation, congestive heart failure, heart attack, high blood pressure-hypertension and heart murmur and related conditions involving obesity and smoking.

Dr. Michael Spivey’s talk included early detection, treatment options and other relevant topics relating to cancer in men. Despite malfunctioning equipment that prevented him from showing his slides, Dr. Spivey gave relevant information about the delivery of high quality cancer care with revolutionary technology and advanced treatment and therapy options.

Both physicians answered several questions from the residents. The For Your Eyes Only program gave the attendees an opportunity to ask personal questions in the comfort of a gender specific environment where men could understand the concerns of other men.

Sleep apnea was the topic for the July lecture, led by Dr. Mukesh Saraiya, Pulmonologist. He explained the sleep disorder is characterized by pauses or infrequent breathing during sleep. This ailment can be diagnosed with an overnight sleep test or sleep study, a polysomnogram, performed in a sleep lab. An individual with this condition may be unaware of having breathing difficulties while asleep, but another person can witness and report the episode. Sleep apnea affects children as well.

Door prizes for the Men’s Health seminar included gift certificates from the Wildhorse Grill and LWRR 2015 Senior Olympics. DATCU provided refreshments and door prizes for both events.

Coming on September 2 is the LWRR Volunteer Fair. Details about Living Well seminars are available from Marie Milleage at [email protected]. For more information about Living Well at Robson Ranch, please contact Susan Hebert at [email protected].
