Queenie’s

A lot of you may have seen Tim Love on TV or be familiar with his restaurants. Lonesome Dove in Ft. Worth is one, and there are several more casual places known as Love Shacks, but Queenie’s is the one I’m writing about. Queenie’s is named for Tim’s mother.
First here’s some background. Tim Love grew up in Denton in the same neighborhood where my family lived. Some of Queenie’s kids were the same age as mine, and we often carpooled. If I remember correctly, there was also some “going steady” going on, but Timmy, as he was known back then, was way younger than the boys my daughters knew. Queenie Love is also a very good bridge player who sometimes plays here at Robson.
Queenie’s is primarily a steakhouse and a first class one. I don’t think you will be disappointed in anything you might order there. It is located just off the square at 115 E. Hickory. I think reservations are a good idea, and you may contact them at 940-442-6834. Many streets in that area are under construction now, so I recommend going a block or two past Hickory and doubling back. Queenie’s is east and slightly north of the square.
One of our party had heard about Queenie’s Jalapeno Cucumber Margarita ($7.50), so of course I had to try one and found it to be very good with only a slight hint of the two vegetables. I must mention at this point that the service is absolutely outstanding. If your drink is more than half empty, you will be asked if you want another. It is not, however, invasive. Before I go any further, I should mention that every item is a la carte at Queenie’s. After perusing the menu I ordered the 10 ounce tenderloin (all the steaks are priced by the ounce), which was $35. It was great although it was too large for me. The eight ounce ($28) would have been plenty. Dwight ordered the special of the day ($31), which was broiled shrimp over lobster risotto and said it was very good. We ordered several sides, which were all very tasty, but I absolutely loved the “fried spinach!” ($8). None of us wanted desert.
As you may have guessed from the prices I have mentioned, Queenie’s is not cheap, but you will get an absolutely A-one meal.
