The Material Girls Club at Robson Ranch (RR) Texas has been sewing masks … a lot of masks. To date, we have donated over 4,100 masks. Our goal is 5,000.
There are 75 volunteers led by coordinator Sandi Price. Material Girls Club members make up 95% of the volunteers. The rest are Robson residents.
Sandi’s front porch has been deemed mask central, where volunteers pick up kits, return finished masks, and also where recipients pick up their allotted masks. We have designated fabric cutters, elastic cutters, sewers, runners, and ironers. Sandi is the washer woman. There is no person-to-person contact and the process works smoothly.
So far, we have donated to 53 organizations, including many nursing homes, medical facilities, food banks, assisted living homes, our own RR workers, many more front-line workers, and even the FBI and the Denton Police Department. We have donated as few as five masks to as many as 413 masks at a time. An international pharmaceutical company working double shifts called to ask for 150 masks. In turn, they donated $5,000 to the Denton County Food Center. Another big company who makes yummy cookies needed 250 masks and donated over 50 cases of food.
Most of the fabric and thread has been donated from the volunteers’ own stashes, the bulk of it 100% quilting cotton. The elastic was purchased by donations. And, oh yes, The Material Girls Club doesn’t keep any donation money above our expenses. It has enabled us to donate $1,500 to the Denton County Food Center.
