Lavelle Carlson
Life has changed for so many people outside and inside Robson Ranch Denton, Texas. The After Schoolers group has been affected but so many on the outside have been affected more. The After Schoolers have been known for fundraisers to help support educators at two of the Denton independent school district schools, Borman Elementary and LaGrone Technology Center.
Due to COVID-19, the After Schoolers had to cancel a major fundraiser, the spring garage sale. However, due to the support we have received through our members and non-members within the Robson Ranch community, we have extra funds to still give to the teachers at these two schools to thank them for all they have done and continue to do for the children.
Some of our doers, Lois and Mitch Mitchell, Nancy Burns, and Pat Hamblin, have been working on setting up the Teacher Appreciation treats. Money was provided to a local family-owned business, Candy Haven, for the Borman teachers to pick up some yummy cupcakes. Treat bags will be taken to the teachers at LaGrone Advanced Technology Center.
The board is changing this year with some remaining on the board and some leaving. Thanks to the 2019-20 board: Judy Riffel Karr, president; Lavelle Carlson, co-vice president; Christine Lovelace, co-vice president; Nancy Burns: secretary; and Lois Mitchell, treasurer.
The new board members for 2020-21 are the following: Judy Riffel Karr, co-president; Nancy Burns, co-president; Marti Conley, co-vice president; Ferne Porter, co-vice president; Sheryl and Bob Cook, secretaries; and Lois Mitchell, treasurer; with LeRoy and Lavelle Carlson on the food drive; Darla Chupp, publicity; and Cathy Hardin, Lavelle Carlson, and Gayle England as field trip organizers.
Others have volunteered to support our teachers as well. Pat Hamblin, Robbie Waits, and Sue Cousin take treats to teachers throughout the year.
There are many doers who do behind-the-scenes work. Judy Riffel-Karr collects puppets and dolls year-round to include in the food baskets, and we have volunteers who take goodies to the schools throughout the year. The After Schoolers is proud to have the support of The Material Girls who provide Christmas stockings for the food baskets. Ferne Porter also is a member of the Material Girls.
There also are non-members who make for successful After Schoolers garage sales. We have several men who help with the furniture pick up, as well as many young volunteer students from LaGrone Advanced Technology Center helping with the garage sales.
An additional advantage of being a member of the After Schoolers is the opportunity to meet others in the Robson Ranch community. Please consider joining us in the fall for fun field trips and doing good in the community.
