The Robson Ranch Singles Club strives to offer a variety of activities and events that will appeal to the varied interests of our club members. In January, members had the opportunity to see a professional basketball game (Dallas Mavericks vs. Washington Wizards) thanks to the excellent organizational skills of our event chair Susan Abler.
On Jan. 27 a chartered bus picked us up at the clubhouse and conveniently dropped us off at the special group’s entrance. While waiting on Kaden, our American Airlines Center group coordinator, I couldn’t help but notice a large group of purple-clad youth with silver shoes with white pom poms with the single word “Performer” written on their backs. Intrigued, I wondered what was in store for us.
Susan arranged for us to watch the two teams during their warm up. This courtside experience allowed the fans in our group to point out a few of the top players on both teams. Then it was off to dinner on our own.
As we finished dinner and started to move to our seats, we heard drums. Next thing we knew, the group of “performers” was using poles to move a large, colorful dragon puppet through the crowds. This festive parade was in celebration of Lunar New Year (Jan. 29), the Year of the Snake.
Then it was off to our seats just in time for the national anthem and tip-off. The Mavericks scored first and maintained their lead the whole game, with a score of 73-43 at the half. During the half-time show, the performers were on the floor dancing again, this time with a very large and long puppet snake.
The Mavericks continued to dominate the game, ending with a score of 130-108. While our more experienced fans would have enjoyed a more competitive game, this fan had fun. There is nothing like the energy you get from a live event. I enjoyed it all, beginning to end. Thank you, Susan, for creating a great experience for us all.
