Robson Ranch’s Just Good Readin’ Book Club meets the first Monday of every month (except if it’s a holiday, then we meet on the second Monday) in the clubhouse. On April 7 we discussed The Briar Club, by Kate Quinn, a haunting and powerful story of female friendships and secrets in a Washington, D.C., boarding house during the Senator McCarthy anti-Communist “Red Scare” era.

Washington, DC, 1950. Everyone keeps to themselves at Briarwood House, a down-at-the-heels, all-female boarding house in the heart of the nation’s capital where secrets hide behind white picket fences. When a shocking act of violence tears the house apart, the Briar Club women must decide, once and for all, who is the true enemy in their midst?

Capturing the paranoia of the McCarthy era and evoking the changing roles for women in postwar America, The Briar Club is an intimate and thrilling novel of secrets and loyalty put to the test.

On Monday, May 5, The Color of Lightning, by Paulette Jiles, will be discussed.

Want to know about the untamed Texas frontier in the 1860s in the aftermath of the Civil War? Thousands gave this “fast paced, heart-stopping” novel five stars.

The New York Times called it “a gripping, deeply relevant book.” The Washington Post said it is “meticulously researched and beautifully crafted. This is a glorious work.”
