As the Wildhorse Lady Niners’ 2025 Season Winds Down

Betty Davis

We are happy to be living in our beautiful Robson Ranch community with all of the amenities we have to enjoy, especially the golf courses. We are challenged by the game of golf, albeit some of us much more than others, but we are persevering to overcome that challenge.

We are grateful to and for the 12 members who serve on the Wildhorse Lady Niners (WLN) board. You may not be aware of what it takes to keep the WLN running smoothly. It is a lot of work, more so for some of the positions, but all positions are necessary, and each is integral to the whole. The tasks involve creating weekly fun group play and all that entails, which is a lot: responsibility for making all of the arrangements; procuring courses/lodging/creating fun game time for down time at the hotel to create pleasurable travel days to explore golf away from our home courses; encouraging all members to achieve a handicap and maintaining the information in USGA GHIN regarding those attained; keeping our by-laws up to date; initiating, developing, and administering “Making Finer Niners” sessions to educate our golfers on frequently asked questions, rules, tips, golf etiquette, etc.; sending sunshine notes to ill or injured members; arranging and decorating four quarterly luncheon meetings and the occasional happy hour or two, as well as any other special social occasions; keeping us abreast of what is happening regarding the golf courses in regards to maintenance or anything that would affect the availability to play on the courses; welcoming and assisting new members to get everything they need to be successful and integrated members in the Lady Niners; taking payments/paying invoices/managing the checkbook for all income and expenditures of the WLN; making sure all of the information our members need to know gets disseminated in a timely and clear manner; writing articles and placing pictures in the Pioneer Press to highlight our organization; capturing the minutes of our monthly board meetings, which is not as easy as it may sound; and, finally, maintaining decorum, sanity, and order during the meetings to keep the discussions on point and ensure we come to a reasonable and workable conclusion on whatever our agenda items may be. Yes, to coin a phrase, it takes a village!

We are serious about performing as well as possible so that your golf experiences are as seamless and enjoyable as they can be. We are so very thankful to the members who offer their services and volunteer to help set up for luncheons or to fill goody sacks for travel days or whatever volunteer duty for which they sign up.

We are better together as we learn and grow in the game and we make new friends and enjoy great fellowship on our play days and beyond.

Finally, we are thrilled that the Wildhorse Lady Niners membership provided a charitable contribution of $4,555 to help create a brighter Christmas for the children and families whose many needs are addressed by Cumberland Youth and Family Services in Denton. Vickie Hackett, vice president of the WLN, presented the funds to Jennifer Jenkinson, development director for Cumberland, at our quarterly meeting and Christmas Luncheon on Dec. 10. We deeply appreciate how generous and compassionate our members are. Thank you so much for your contributions!

We are eagerly anticipating our coming 2026 season and beginning all the organized play dates again. Until that time, during our “off” season, let’s go chase some golf balls and hunt some birdies and eagles!
