In November Mary King, Executive Director of Metroport Meals on Wheels, Roanoke, presented an outstanding and informative educational presentation about the effects of isolation on older adults.
Ms. King explained the difference between loneliness and isolation saying that, “Loneliness is defined as an emotional response to feelings of emptiness, deprivation or sadness or a perception of being alone. Social isolation is defined as a state in which the individual lacks a sense of belonging socially, lacks engagement with others and has a minimal number of social contacts which are deficient as fulfilling quality relationships.”
Isolation impacts one’s health by increasing or causing many ailments, such as hardening of arteries, high blood pressure, insomnia, decrease in memory and cognitive function, premature death, weakened immune system, and increase of risk of cancer or stroke, incidence of depression or the likely need for long-term care.
Some recognized risk factors include loss of spouse, inability to drive, dementia, separation from or loss of family members and friends, mobility challenges or long-term illness.
Older adults in isolation may need assistance with transportation, adaptive devices and technology and addressing physical issues such as hearing, vision and incontinence. Ms. King suggested several ways for friends, relatives and neighbors to stay connected by increasing interaction and contact through short, more frequent visits, regular telephone conversations, dining with others and planning activities with one or more individuals. She also suggested encouraging interests that have a sense of purpose such as hobbies, continuing education, book or garden clubs, pet ownership and volunteering.
