The Living Well at Robson Ranch seminar, presented by Laurie Long, PhD, Community Health Program Manager at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Denton, started the year 2016 with an overview for self-management of diabetes and chronic illnesses. The program emphasized the importance of making and following an action plan for individuals living with diabetes and other chronic illnesses.
This interactive seminar allowed questions from the audience regarding their personal situations as well as questions to or from Dr. Long to identify areas of specific concern. The interaction provided a basis for self-management skills leading to living healthier lives and realizing the importance of monitoring one’s actions and results. Nutrition Facts, Choose My Plate, Type 2 Diabetes Risk Test, and other handouts supplemented the talk.
Since nutrition, healthy eating and exercise play essential roles in maintaining a healthy existence, attendees saw a demonstration of building the right size healthy plate with good food choices. Dr. Long encouraged appropriate exercise according to each person’s condition and ability and acknowledged residents for participating in a diversified selection of exercises and in sponsoring the Robson Olympics.
Marie Milleage, impersonating Vanna White, acted as scribe. She made charts of the various steps and actions suggesting monitoring symptoms relating to diabetes, other chronic illnesses, medications, depression and communicating with healthcare professionals.
The seminar introduced two Stanford University workshops scheduled for Robson Ranch. Each workshop will include a workbook, Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions. Participation in each workshop is by registration only and requires a commitment to attend at least four of six sessions.
