SawStop Table Saw Training class in 2024
Lorraine Wilson
After a brief hiatus, the Woodshop is excited to announce the return of its Training Program. Mark Freeman, the training coordinator, spent the holiday season developing a comprehensive plan for 2025. Collaborating with Steve Russell, vice president of the Woodshop, Freeman’s initial plans have been finalized and will be implemented soon.
The program is designed to support new members, many of whom are inexperienced or novice woodworkers. A key focus is training participants to use powered equipment in the Woodshop safely and effectively. This includes tools such as the jointer, planer, compound miter saw, sanders, band saws, table saws, drill press, and router table. To ensure thorough instruction, training will be conducted in small groups, allowing participants to gain hands-on experience and a solid understanding of each tool’s operation.
Experienced woodworkers from the club will lead the training sessions. Safety remains a top priority, with the curriculum emphasizing not only how to use the equipment but also the safest practices for doing so. Additionally, for further reference, manufacturer instructions for the equipment are available on the club’s website for all members’ access.
As participants become more comfortable with the tools, they will have the opportunity to work with a mentor. Fred Ahrens, who is heading the Mentor Program this year, has assembled a team of skilled woodworkers to guide new members. Mentors will assist participants in completing specific projects, such as cutting boards, boxes, or toys, providing guidance through every step of the process.
The program also offers opportunities for intermediate woodworkers to advance their skills. The board plans to introduce advanced machine training and challenging projects. These include intricate woven cutting boards, unique boxes, Ring Master bowls, trays, picture frames, bandsaw boxes, wine racks, and more.
With its focus on education, safety, and mentorship, the Woodshop Training Program aims to foster a welcoming and supportive environment for woodworkers of all skill levels. Whether you are just beginning or looking to take on advanced projects, the program offers something for everyone.
