On Sept. 20 from 6 to 9 p.m., 125 Baby Boomers gathered for an unforgettable evening of wine, culture, and community. The event featured a unique “progressive tasting” format, with each ticket holder visiting three of five beautifully hosted homes. Each stop highlighted the flavors of a different wine region of the world, thoughtfully paired with appetizers that reflected the culture and cuisine of each country.
Featured countries, wines, and pairings:
• South Africa: Neethlingshof Pinotage and Spier Chenin Blanc, paired with minced curry dip/slider. Hosts: Lesa and Rick Carpenter
• New Zealand: King Maui Marlborough Pinot Noir and Reserve Sauvignon Blanc, paired with kiwi salsa. Hosts: Nancy and Bob Tastle
• Argentina: Phebus Torrontés and Malbec Reserva, paired with Carbonada Criolla stew. Hosts: Debbie and Owen Deverich
• Australia: Fossick Barossa Shiraz and Snake and Herring “Perfect Day” SBS, paired with Australian cheese and onion dip. Hosts: Susan and Tom Doty
• Chile: Carmen Gran Reserva Chardonnay and Vistamar Bordevalle Carménère, paired with empanadas with guacamole and sour cream. Hosts: Susan and Dave Parker. Note: The original hosts, Joan and Kurt Delabar, were unable to participate due to illness.
This year, Susan Parker enlisted neighborhood sommelier Doug Akins to assist with wine selection. His expertise added a professional touch, ensuring the pairings were both authentic and exceptional. Carol Jankowski selected the food pairings. Guests praised the choices, noting that the wines and appetizers created a perfect balance of flavor and discovery.
The evening was more than just about wine. It was about community. Laughter, conversation, and shared experiences filled each home, reminding everyone of the joy that comes from gathering together. With its blend of culture and camaraderie, this year’s International Wines and Flavors was a true success and a highlight of the Baby Boomers’ calendar.
