Extra, Extra, Extra—read all about it. Here at Robson Ranch Denton, the residents have access to the best horseshoe pits in North Texas. Cost? Guess what—it’s free. We do not have any dues. We have a supply storage unit behind the horseshoe pits with plenty of horseshoes and pick-up sticks (for those with bad backs who have trouble picking up the shoes). There is no lock on the storage unit. We rely on the honor system.
If you want to laugh and just want to have fun, this is the place to be. You stand where you are comfortable. There is no arguing recording points. We play closest to the pin during regular play. The only time we score according to the rules is when we hold a tournament.
Even though the pits are open 24 hours a day, we generally play on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays with an 8 a.m. start time due to the heat. In the fall and winter, the start time changes to 1 p.m.
We have supplied score pads for each set of horseshoe pits. We have color-coded golf tees to use on the score pads to replicate the color of shoes you are throwing.
All of the loose, slippery gravel and uneven grass has been replaced by the HOA with astro turf, and the sand is what they are using on the golf course.
We participate in the Robson Olympics with three tournaments each year. We also have an annual veterans tournament with medals.
Remember, all residents and their guests are welcome to use this fantastic facility. We also have a strong contingent of women playing. As a matter of fact, a woman (Martha Gills) won the Robson Olympics several years ago, outplaying the men’s top thrower.
