The Garden Club met for our first meeting of the 2025-26 club year on Sept. 15. Club President Betsy Duncan presented the new and returning board members. Vice President Debbie Greenslade discussed suggestions for future meetings.
Master Gardener Barbara Smith, with Denton Master Gardeners, presented “Fall Colors.” She showed multiple plantings, including scarlet sage (afternoon sun), winecup ground cover (purple flowers close in the evening), orange flowering butterfly milkweed, swamp milkweed (this likes wet feet), and crossvine. Her recommendation for flowering trees is the new hybrid dessert willows, which come in several colors. Her presentation kept everyone wanting more. She even brought six plants to give away, including their white pots! The drawings were an enormous success, and more than 20 members and visitors left with fun treasures.
Family dues are $10 for our club year, September through May. Come join the fun and meet your neighbors.
There will be no Oct. 20 meeting in the clubhouse. We will meet in the Lonestar Room on Nov. 17 at 10:30 a.m. Watch your HOA email blasts for program information.
Oct. 20 will be a field trip and optional lunch. We will carpool to Shiloh Field Community Garden located at 1650 Nottingham Drive, Denton. It is the largest community garden in the U.S. The tour starts at 10:30 a.m. and ends at 11:30 a.m. If you can drive and have room for others to carpool with you, meet at the clubhouse parking lot by 9:55 a.m. We will leave at 10 a.m. We recommend you wear garden, tennis, or close-toed shoes—no sandals. Bring your own bug spray and hat. Please wear your name tags!
After the tour, please join us for lunch at the GreenHouse Restaurant, 600 N. Locust Street, Denton. Plan to arrive at the restaurant by 11:45 a.m. The distance between Shiloh Field Community Garden and the GreenHouse Restaurant is 1.9 miles. The total cost is $24, which includes three entrée options, coffee/tea/soda, and tip. Alcohol is optional but not included. If you plan to attend this optional lunch with our group, make your check payable to RR Garden Club and drop it off at Janice Brown’s home, 9204 Bradford Street. Look for a manilla envelope under her front door mat. Your $24 check is your RSVP, and it is due Monday, Oct. 13, by 2 p.m.
Happy Gardening as you prepare your landscape for fall!
