Scott Greer, master arborist and owner of Tree Shepherds of Flower Mound, was the guest speaker for the RR Garden Club meeting on January 20, 2019. Scott gave a very informative program and slide show on how to be successful with Tree Establishment and Care. First, proper planting is crucial, do not plant too deep, the root base should be level or above of the ground. Secondly, proper watering, he suggested one day to two days of watering deep but not often, (approximately eight minutes per station) unless in extreme heat and dry weather, (then maybe more). The tree must not sit in water or it will react as a tree that does not get enough water; leaves will brown and, eventually, it will die. The third ‘P’ is proper pruning for trees. His slides showed us how thinning out branches could actually improve the appearance and health of the tree.

The club had many new members attending and Scott answered all questions the audience had to ask. He donated a soil knife to the person who could tell us who first said this quote, “Let us cross over the river and rest under the shade of the trees”. Andre Marrou answered correctly, the author was Stonewall Jackson. Andre now has a handy soil knife to use in gardening and caring for his trees.

Next month, on February 18, our meeting will take place in the Lone Star Room of the Clubhouse at 10:30 a.m. we will have Mrs. Shirlee Singer giving her presentation on design landscaping and horticultural practices. Mrs. Singer has been a Master Gardener since 2009 and has been teaching horticultural practices from Texas A&M EarthKind and design since 2011. She is a Professor Emeritus from the College of Design at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa and has taught basic design for eight years at the University of North Texas.

New members are always welcome to join our club. It is $10 per household and we have a lot of fun programs in
the works.
