Genealogy Club Celebrates Spring

Beyond the Census: What can you learn from your ancestor’s occupation?

David M. Randall

This spring, the Robson Ranch Genealogy Club continues its offering of programs designed to guide and inspire family history researchers of all levels.

Last month, we were pleased to welcome genealogist Bernard Meisner who presented “Beyond the Big Four.” Drawing on the Genealogical Proof Standard’s call for a “reasonably exhaustive search,” Bernard encouraged researchers to look past the four major genealogy websites—FamilySearch, Ancestry, MyHeritage, and FindMyPast—and explore national, state, regional, and local resources that are too often overlooked. His presentation highlighted numerous free (or mostly free) websites that can provide answers once the “low-hanging fruit” has been picked clean.

Coming up on the evening of March 17, the club will host a special Irish Day social. Club President Mickey Grames will share stories from her travels in Ireland while offering practical guidance on researching Irish ancestors. Members will gain insight into the Emerald Isle’s history, culture, and traditions and discover organizations and websites to support their research. (Sorry, no green beer!)

On April 7 Barbara Coakley, president of the Genealogy Friends of Plano Libraries, treasurer of the Texas State Genealogical Society, and volunteer with the Dallas Genealogical Society, will present “Beyond the Census: Uncovering the Story of Your Ancestor’s Business.” This session explores how our ancestors’ occupations were more than just their livelihood; they were part of their identity, community standing, and daily life. Attendees will learn how to move beyond census records to uncover meaningful details about ancestral businesses and professions.

Then on April 21, courthouse expert John Sellers will present a program on courthouse research. Few individuals escaped mention in court records—whether as litigants, witnesses, jurors, or petition signers—making them rich sources of genealogical insight. Mr. Sellers will explain court structure, the types of records available, online access options, and the benefits of researching in person, along with how to prepare for a courthouse visit.

The Robson Ranch Genealogy Club welcomes researchers of all experience levels. Presentations are held at 7 p.m. on the first and third Tuesdays of each month, and Help Sessions are open to everyone and take place at 2 p.m. on the second Monday of the month. All meetings are held in the CATC, Room 104. Your first session is free. Annual dues are $20 per individual or $30 per household. If you’ve ever wondered about the stories hidden in your own family tree, this is the perfect time to join us and begin discovering them.
