Growing, Greenhouse, and Goodies at the Republican Club

Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller

Lynne Kelsey

What’s better than a cookie bake-off? One that welcomes all forms of baked goods! This year, the Robson Ranch Republican Club will be hosting its Second Annual Bake America Great Again Competition, and this time we’re looking for cookies, pies, cakes, scones, muffins—any kind of baked yumminess. They must be patriotically themed (either in decoration or packaging), homemade, and labeled for allergens such as peanuts. All the details are included on the official form, which is available at our September meeting or from Hospitality and Special Events Chair Laurie Wiginton at [email protected].

That’s not all that’s going on that evening, though! Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller will be our special guest. A former member of the Texas House of Representatives, Miller was elected Agriculture Commissioner in 2014 and is now serving his third term. He will present “Agriculture: More Than Dirt,” and after his remarks, he will act as auctioneer for the goodies chosen for a live auction. The rest of the entries will be offered in a silent auction.

Proceeds from this auction will be donated to the Volunteer Services Council for Denton State Supported Living Center (DSSLC) to support the new greenhouse that is being built on their campus on State School Road. Home to more than 400 individuals with intellectual, physical, and behavioral health disabilities, DSSLC serves 18 counties in North Texas. The greenhouse, which will provide occupational and recreational opportunities for the residents, will be named for the organization’s longtime supporter, Texas gardening expert Neil Sperry.

Make sure you attend the Oct. 4 RRRC meeting. You’ll learn about Texas agriculture, support a great cause, and maybe leave with some sweet treats!
