Upon meeting Julia Kellogg, one might think that she was a born artist. “To the contrary,” she says, Julia did not delve into her painting and collage creations until 2010 after retiring from her 29-year career as a corporate executive for Kohl’s. It was, however, in Julia’s genes to create lovely works of art, as did her mother who was noted for her pastels and oil paintings.
Raised and educated through high school in West Berlin, she was given the opportunity to visit multiple art museums and galleries as her mother pursued her own passion to learn more about art with young Julia in tow.
Julia has always been fashion conscious and returned to the States from West Berlin to attend the University of Oklahoma, majoring in fashion merchandising and marketing. After retiring from her long career with Kohl’s, she sold real estate for a time.
These days, she finds camaraderie with fellow artists in the Paint & Palette Club at Robson. She enjoys making her own papers from which she creates collages and books. To her collages she adds touches of metal and textures and uses stencils to create patterns in her work. Finally, she covers the work with coats of resin. Her home studio is located in her casita where you will find an ornate glass entry door which identifies “The Studio” in fancy gold stenciling.
Julia is frequently seen working on projects in the Indian Paintbrush Room in the CATC building wearing a practical but artsy coverall jeans jumper and paint shirt. She still loves fashion but creates her own look to be comfortable for whatever the occasion may be. You may view her unique submissions of art in the next Art Exhibition at the clubhouse scheduled for May 19 through May 25. The theme is Kaleidoscope of Nature. If you visit the exhibit on Saturday, May 24, from 5 to 7 p.m., you will have the opportunity to meet and chat with the artists.
Julia is a member of the Greater Denton Art Council. She also enjoys traveling throughout the world. At home she likes to knit, sew, and listen to classical music. Some of her favorite artists to follow are Nicholas Wilton, Louise Fletcher, Marybeth Quinn, and Jane Monteith.
Upcoming events for the Paint & Palette Club are classes in Zentangle and Ink Sketching, Part 2, on May 19. Classes are complimentary for members, with a fee of $15 for nonmembers if space allows.
Hours for the Indian Paintbrush Room are Mondays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Membership for the year is $10.
