The Robson Ranch Just Good Readin’ Book Club, with more than 80 members, will discuss The Frozen River, by Ariel Lawhon, on Monday, Oct. 6, at 7 p.m. in the clubhouse. All are invited.

Paul Revere is back as a silversmith. But the story is based on another New England American hero, a renowned midwife who not only saves babies and mothers’ lives because of her skill, but solves a murder mystery in her town in Maine

Said one reviewer, “Clever, layered, and subversive, Ariel Lawhon’s newest offering introduces an unsung heroine who refused to accept anything less than justice at a time when women were considered best seen and not heard. The Frozen River is a thrilling, tense, and tender story about a remarkable woman who left an unparalleled legacy.”

What women were allowed to do, and what they were forbidden to do, is indeed an interesting aspect of this novel. People magazine said, “Once again, Lawhon works storytelling magic with a real-life heroine.”

Said one other reviewer, “This book offers a compelling narrative that centers on an extraordinary female protagonist who dedicates her intellectual prowess and personal time to transforming her community. Through her unwavering commitment and strategic efforts, she works tirelessly to enhance the safety, quality of life, and overall well-being of every resident. Her character embodies resilience, compassion, and a profound sense of social responsibility, making the story not just an engaging read but also an inspiring testament to the power of individual action in creating positive societal change.”

On Monday, Nov. 3, again at 7 p.m. at the clubhouse, the Book Club will discuss Celine, by Peter Heller, a very different and most entertaining mystery. Celine has made a career out of tracking down missing people nobody else can find. This time she heads to Yellowstone National Park to follow a trail that has truly gone cold and soon realizes that somebody desperately wants to keep this case closed.

Entertainment Weekly calls it a “gorgeously wrought story.” Says Amazon, “Combining ingenious plotting with crystalline prose and sweeping natural panoramas, Peter Heller gives us his finest work.”

Questions can be addressed to the club’s president Peggy Backes at 940-262-3390.
