Just Good Readin’ Book Club

Paul Knopick

In June Robson Ranch’s Just Good Readin’ Book Club will discuss a Nobel Prize in Literature winner, Kazuo Ishiguro’s The Remains of the Day. A film version of the book was nominated for eight Academy Awards.

It’s an intricate and dazzling novel. It is a novel that teaches that it is better to enjoy the present time in one’s life than to dwell on the past. Do not muse over lost opportunities, grab them while you can.

The book’s title refers to the compelling portrait of the butler who has decided not to let opportunities in life go by (as he has so often) and will follow that advice in the remainder of his life.

The Book Club will meet on Monday, June 1, at 7 p.m. in the clubhouse. All are welcome.

On Monday, May 4, the club will meet to discuss Cod: A Biography of the Fish That Changed the World, by Mark Kurlansky.

Cod, it turns out, is the reason Europeans set sail across the Atlantic, and it is the only reason they could. Vikings ate the fish, dried in the frosty air, broken into pieces, and eaten like hardtack. What was the staple of the medieval diet? Cod, sold with salt.

Learn more on this subject by exploring this intriguing, thoughtful history, an award-winning non-fiction book, and enjoying the discussion.
