Women from Voices United meet for a lively book discussion.
Elaine Kushmaul
A group of progressive women met to engage in a facilitated book discussion. The book Waking Up White, by Debby Irving, was the focus of a deep and reflective discussion. The conversation explored the themes of race, privilege, and systemic inequality that Irving addresses in her memoir. Participants were struck by Irving’s candid narrative of her own racial awakening. In recounting her own journey from ignorance to greater understanding about racial privilege, it resonated with some of our own experiences. Some participants shared personal stories of realizing how their own actions or inactions contributed to maintaining systems of inequality.
The discussion about Waking Up White was both introspective and forward-thinking, with the group recognizing the complexities of race and privilege in today’s society. The conversation provided an opportunity for personal reflection and collective growth. The attendees left the discussion feeling more empowered to continue the work of confronting racial injustice, acknowledging their privilege, and seeking tangible ways to support anti-racism efforts in their communities.
