Motorcycle Club: New Mexico Is Calling

The Crew

Stan Brein

Part of the fun of being in a motorcycle club is the planning and anticipation of group rides. Of particular interest are those overnight and extended trips that occur annually. Each year at the annual planning meeting, the event is placed on the yearly calendar so members can lock in those dates. Members volunteer (okay, sometimes they are “encouraged”) to coordinate events. This includes planning the dates, finding scenic routes suitable for motorcycles, securing lodging, scoping out great eateries, and finding interesting and unique things to do at the destination.

Ride Captain Mike Conley, Ron Bane, Keith Breiner, Robert Whipple, Steve Williams, Steve Collins, Larry Denk, Joy Denk, and Doug Henderson took off for the annual Angel Fire ride on June 2, lasting through June 8. To beat the heat, they got an early start on day one with a planned visit to the Texas Air & Space Museum. After a refreshing dip in the pool, day two took the group to Angel Fire to enjoy the hospitality of Steve and Donna Williams. After that was the crowning glory—riding through Northern New Mexico. Combined with good food, campfires, and cooler evening temperatures, this rates as one of the better motorcycling experiences.

The June 20 ride to Ernesto’s Fine Mexican Food in Pilot Point was changed from a dinner ride to a lunch ride to avoid the late afternoon heat. The Bakers, Riddles, Collinses, Breiners, Conways, Conleys, Carolyn Jacobs, Dave Popejoy, and Jeff Stieber participated. Vicki and Scott Baker served as Ride Captains for this adventure.

Another great annual event is preparing for the 4th of July Independence Day Parade at the July 3 Decorating Party. It’s a blast getting those festive adornments out of the attic and stapling or duct taping them to your pristine and shiny motorcycle. Everyone tries to outdo their neighbor so they can be captured on Mike Conley’s drone camera for viewing at the end-of-year Holiday Party. As much fun as the decorating party is, again, it is mainly a ruse for gathering with friends in order to prepare, bring, and indulge in some great food and beverage. Though I am always skeptical of being invited to a party where they ask you to bring zip ties and scissors! We are so grateful to Vicki and Scott Baker for again opening their house to our motley crew. You guys have the best neighbors!

Coming up on July 18, Steve Bouse has set up a breakfast ride to My Café in Flower Mound. We are looking forward to it. Sept. 29 to 30 is the ride to Granbury, including the 9 to 5 Show at the Granbury Opera House.

A big welcome to the Motorcycle Club for Jeff Stieber, Jim Sczymanski, and Tony Thomas. We are always looking to connect with new riders on the Ranch. Come join us! And if you know of a great ride, let me know at [email protected].

See you on the road!

Beware of cagers, and keep the rubber side down!
