Each Wednesday morning volunteers from Robson Ranch go out to Ponder to help out with the Riding Unlimited horse therapy program. We are involved with grooming the horses, saddling and bridling the horses and walking them before the riders mount up. After the riders are up in the saddle some of us lead the horses while others assist the riders as we walk about the arena. A trained instructor leads the entire session and provides guidance for the leaders and riders.
Riding Unlimited’s mission for the past 25 years has been to turn disabilities into possibilities. We help individuals with physical, educational, intellectual and emotional disabilities through the power of the horse. Therapeutic horsemanship improves strength, balance, coordination, memory utilization, muscle tone, motor skills, social interaction and self-esteem. Our facility is a Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship, Int’l (PATH) (formerly NARHA) Premier Accredited center and our instructors are PATH-certified. Riding Unlimited is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Founded in 1990, we currently operate on our 49-acre facility in Ponder, Texas with our 14 therapy horses and almost 200 volunteers.
While riding is certainly therapeutic for the riders, it also therapeutic for the volunteers as they give of their time for this wonderful program. Volunteers are always needed. Contact Riding Unlimited at [email protected] or John Kirk at [email protected] for more information.
