The subject of immigration is a hot topic these days, especially in Texas. That’s why Robson Democratic Club members devoted their January meeting to a discussion of the issue in preparation for the activity expected in the next four years.
Members prepared for the meeting by taking a short quiz to test their knowledge of immigration issues, then listening to a number of recent podcasts on the topic and reading current articles from reliable news sources.
Members Jane Scholz and Donna Gardner assembled the reading list and prepared a brief slideshow to guide the discussion. Members shared their thoughts at the meeting on four main topic areas:
• Why talk about immigration now?
• Who are the immigrants in the U.S.?
• Who’s right about the impact of immigrants on crime, jobs, and the cost of immigrants (mostly educating those of school age) to state and local governments?
• What should be done about this?
The club devoted about 70 minutes to a vigorous discussion of these issues, including the estimate that about a quarter of workers in Texas construction and agriculture are undocumented.

Robson Ranch Democrats learn about civic and political issues together, respecting each other’s opinions. We meet candidates, register voters, volunteer to help elect Democrats, serve as election workers, and have a good time together! We meet monthly (except May, June, July, and December) on the first Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in the Robson clubhouse. Everyone is welcome.
