By the time this article comes out in September, the Fall Season will be underway. The board has been dealing with many positive issues and some disappointments as The Labor Day Tournament and the Fall League is approaching fast.
As you know, spring softball was a challenge due to the record rainfalls here. Many games couldn’t be played due to field conditions and access from the temporary road to the field. We had to cancel the end of season tournament and rescheduled the free picnic for Labor Day and the opening of the fall season. Even though the roads and parking lot at the softball field are paved, we are still unable to use them. The festivities were held on September 5 and 6 which included the free picnic, dunking booth (proceeds went to Support Our Troops), and a single elimination tournament.
On a good note, this summer was the first time for a summer league at Robson Ranch in Denton. Games were played every Tuesday morning with a special priced lunch at the Wildhorse Grill. Some felt it would be too hot to play in the Texas heat, but those who did, felt it to be pleasant during the early morning hours. The RRSA would like to thank Paul Neal and Fred Palmer for taking on the task of managing the teams. It is a hard task to keep the lineup profitable each week and to deal with missing players. They happily agreed to borrow players so each one would have enough. Also, thank you to the ones who umpired, the scorekeepers and the grill for accommodating the players at lunch time. It was felt that the summer games were a success and would likely be continued in the future.
The draft for the fall season was completed with seven teams having an average of thirteen to fourteen players. The first game will be on September 8; games will run through October. Games are played on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday nights at 6:00 p.m.
Hopefully, by October all the roads, parking lot, and entrance will be complete to give easier access to the field so everyone can come and watch a game.
