Historically, Thanksgiving symbolized the successful harvest and the gifts of nature, while today it represents a generous feast of turkey, vegetables, fruits, and pies to be shared with loved ones. The holiday is also a reminder to be thankful, not only for this bounty, but for family, community, and other the blessings of life.

Unfortunately, the recent government shutdown and decrease in SNAP program benefits took a toll on many families in Denton county and across the nation. Recognizing there were those forgoing the traditional celebration due to financial hardships, Jackie Shaw (Flower Mound resident, advocate, and activist) put out the call for local organizations to partner with her to provide Thanksgiving food baskets to those in need.

Jackie Ford (Robson Ranch resident) coordinated the food drive in our community and was unrelenting in making sure families had a seat at the table this holiday. Through her efforts, Robson Ranch organizations Voices United, Pilot Knob Rotary, African American Social Group, and the Silver Rock Way Neighborhood donated 12 baskets filled with a $25 gift card for the purchase of a turkey and over 15 food items, enough to serve a full Thanksgiving meal. (In all, 61 baskets donated by Denton County residents were delivered to needy families in advance of the upcoming holiday.)

The adage, “No child in America need go hungry,” was felt by many. This holiday, and throughout the year, Robson residents have literally given blood, sweat, food, personal items, and even tears to those less fortunate. We opened our hearts to those without the means to celebrate, reinforcing the holiday’s true meaning: a time for reflection, gratitude, and giving.

A heartfelt thanks for giving is extended to all those who contributed. Through your small act of kindness, together, we filled the table and enhanced the spirit of Thanksgiving by bringing joy to a deserving family.
