This month the Rockin’ Readers Book Club celebrates its fifth anniversary, and it is still going strong. Originally formed by 12 women on Silver Rock Way, it has now expanded to include a few neighbors on Basalt Lane. The club meets monthly and discusses books hand-picked by the host. To date, we have read more than 50 books. Book selections include all genres, i.e., fiction, nonfiction, sci-fi, mysteries, and even poetry! This wide variety gives each of us an opportunity to read books we may not have selected for ourselves.
Each month the host provides snacks, a light dinner, and, of course, wine! The host then leads the book discussion with questions that assist the group with the subject’s themes and messages. Some clever hosts even use the book as part of the theme for the evening.
Recently, our host Ann Allender selected West with Giraffes, by Lynda Rutledge. Ann not only visited the Fort Worth Zoo for photos with giraffes, but also made a contribution to the Save the Giraffes Now charity. Decorations and food also reflected the theme of her book selection.
We’ve had a fun five years of friendship, reading, and learning, and we hope to continue our book club for years to come.
