Cherlyn Conway
You don’t have to be a longtime resident of Robson Ranch to know we are proud of flying our flags and that the weather here in North Texas can be brutal on those flags.
According to the National Flag Foundation, the U.S. Flag Code says, “The Flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.” When an American flag is worn beyond repair, it should be retired in a respectful manner.
Tattered and torn flags can accumulate quickly here at the Ranch, and a few years ago, the question was asked about who will take these flags and dispose of them properly. Being members of Support Our Troops (SOT), having active military and many veterans in our family, and Bob Conway being a lifetime member of the VFW, the challenge was accepted to provide a haven for these old, tired, worn flags. It’s as easy as 1, 2, 3:
1. Gather your flags, Texas as well.
2. Load them into your golf cart, bike, or car and come to 11905 Willet Way.
3. Drop them in the patriotic box on the porch any time, no notice needed.
Flags will be collected then taken to Denton VFW Post 2205 for a proper flag burning ceremony, usually with the scouts of Scouting America, formerly Boy Scouts of America.
Flags that have flown at the Robson entrances, street flags installed by SOT, flags from Veterans Park by the clubhouse, and the many flags from the residents have kept the flag box busy. It is always heartfelt to see so many flags waving proudly at Robson Ranch, Texas.
We encourage you to continue to replace those worn, tattered, faded flags and be a part of retiring them with dignity to their final resting place.
While we’re talking about flag etiquette, and some might not know, according to the Flag Code, if the American flag is displayed outdoors after sunset, it must be properly illuminated. You can purchase many different types of lighting to see that your flag is properly lit with the respect it deserves.
