Mike Welton grew up in Hawaii and California in a musical family where his father was a professional keyboard player and his mother was an amateur harpist. Opportunities to play cello, violin and cornet convinced Mike to take up the trumpet more seriously. In high school and college, Mike was the principle trumpet player in the concert band and lead trumpet in the jazz band. Mike’s trumpet playing helped pay his way through college and at that same time he continued to play professionally. Then life responsibilities took over and his horn was packed away.
After being away from his horn for 40 years, Mike started the process of getting his “chops” back in shape this past January and continues to regain his former playing ability while playing in the Young At Heart Dance Band of Denton and the Robson Ranch Chamber Ensemble here at the Ranch.
