Spring into boot camp!

“There are so many positive reasons why seniors should stay active,” says Barbara Shippy, Robson Ranch resident and director of the Boot Camp classes offered at the Sports Center. “As we age, our bodies change. We find it more difficult to do the things we use to do. Exercise can help us in multiple ways. Just a few of the benefits include reducing coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, colon cancer, diabetes, symptoms of anxiety/depression, and the swelling of joints and pain associated with arthritis. It also promotes healthy bones and muscles along with helping us live independently. It ‘keeps us moving’…that is what it is all about!”

Boot Camp uses three different levels of activity for each participant…beginner, intermediate and advanced. Barbara explains, “Since no two people are alike, exercise must be aimed at individual levels within a group setting. Many participants suffer from chronic, disabling health conditions while others are healthier. Some people are advanced while others are just beginning an exercise program. We wanted to address the diversity of needs of every participant. By showing three different levels of each exercise, each participant can do what is best for their specific needs. Anyone can do this class…they just have to learn their own capabilities. Chairs are used for participants that may need balance support or for people that are unable to go to the floor for some exercises.”

The primary goal of Boot Camp is not about how much a participant can or cannot do. It is about each individual and what they are able to do to improve their health. This fifty-minute workout incorporates all muscle groups, which increases endurance, core strength, flexibility and balance while burning an average of 500 calories. The workout is low-impact with minimal stress to the joints and includes stretching, strength training/toning and cardio.

“Boot Camp is all about having fun while exercising to favorite music from the ’50s to the ’70s,” states Mike Shippy, technical director. “More importantly, it is about encouraging a healthy life style by applying modifications in a fun atmosphere. Walk by the gym during boot camp – you will hear participants counting, singing and just having fun! Since Boot Camp originated there have been dozens of success stories. Over 572 pounds and dozens of inches have been lost. Participants have been able to reduce their medications while many others have said they sleep better. Boot Camp is about staying or becoming healthier!”
