Guys, before you rush to book a tee time, the girls are now gone. “Girls Gone Wild” was the theme of the Wildhorse Lady Niners’ (WLN) last travel day for the season on Nov. 3-4, and the weather cooperated in a magnificent way. We had 46 women dressed in “wild” attire, poised to play two days of nine-hole golf at Squaw Valley Golf Course in beautiful Glen Rose, Texas. Outfits ranged from colorful dinosaur shirts paying homage to the dinosaur history in the area, wild and colorful “under-the-sea” attire, and my personal favorite, three sassy felines playing golf in the wild at Squaw Valley.
There are two 18-hole courses available: the Apache Links and the Comanche Lakes. We played the front nine on the “Links” on our first day and finished the back nine on our second day. This course has Squaw Creek flowing through it, which the back nine never let us forget, since it plays along and across the creek. We began a series of shots we would hit over the creek at the 11th hole. Ultimately, we played across the creek six out of the nine holes. Needless to say, a few balls were sacrificed to the meandering waters.
First Day Winners, Front 9: First Place: Joyce Condit, Brenna Aston, Julie Jones, Kim Lackey; Second Place: Julie Stover, Diana Huron, Sandra Hickman, Lezlie Hedges; Third Place: Laura Jordan, Ionara Rodgers, Stacey Ingram
Second Day Winners, Back 9: First Place: Lynn Pengelly, Nancy Johnson, Suzanne Doucette; Second Place: Julie Stover, Diana Huron, Sandra Hickman, Lezlie Hedges; Third Place: Jeana Stieber, Carolann Boykin, Michelle Corcoran, Sherry Garvin
This was the last travel day to be orchestrated by our WLN Travel Coordinator Joyce Condit who has held the position for the past two years. Joyce has done a wonderful job taking us to several different courses and ensuring that each travel day game went off seamlessly. The WLN is searching for its next travel coordinator among the many talented ladies who are members. We are sure she is out there. We are also sure she has some very big shoes to fill. Thank you, Joyce, for all the fun and your hard work and dedication!
The back nine is where the Links hits you with tons of character! The back plays along and across Squaw Creek, which meanders through the property. The 11th kicks off the parade of shots you’ll hit over the creek. All in all, you play across the creek on six of the nine holes.
While I don’t think there is a bad hole on the back nine, the par 3 14th is the signature hole. The 14th is a 165-yard par 3 that is an outstanding hole. It plays across the creek, which can come into play if you miss short or left, as everything feeds towards the creek.
