For a library enthusiast and book lover, it’s a pleasure to see how many residents enjoy visits from the staff of the Denton Public Library (DPL). The Robson Ranch Library hosts two visits from the Denton Public Library each spring and fall. The first of the season is always the extremely popular DPL Library Card Signup and Hands-on E-Reader and Digital Audio Books Assistance Program, and the second is a changing presentation by the DPL Outreach Librarian, Haley Phillips, on some features the Denton Public Library offers.

On March 22, 74 residents received assistance from the DPL staff right here in our Robson Ranch Library! You can, of course, drive to one of the three DPL branches to sign up for a library card, but it’s just so easy to do it right here at the Ranch! On the days they visit, the librarians also bring along various brochures with information on library services. We always keep the extra brochures they leave with us on file at the front desk. Just ask the library volunteer on duty for the brochure you’d like. There’s a brochure with general DPL information, a pamphlet on The Forge: Denton Public Library Makerspace at North Branch, information on Genealogy Resources and on Denton Municipal Archives available at the Emily Fowler Central Library, and a card on the cloudLibrary.

The hands-on help the DPL staff offers for digital readers and audiobooks is becoming increasingly popular with residents. If you, like me, thought you’d never embrace reading on a digital device rather than picking up a “real” book, think again! I’ve found that it’s just another way to access the book I want to read! I now enjoy reading those much-loved “real” books our Robson Library offers, as well as reading e-books and listening to audiobooks from the Denton Public Library. DPL offers digital materials through both cloudLibrary and Hoopla, and you will need to download those apps to your device in order to access their digital items.

On April 26 the DPL Outreach Librarian provided an informative program on the DPL website www.library.cityofdenton.com. Again, we had great attendance. Twenty-eight residents learned the ins and outs of using and navigating the DPL website. Residents learned a lot about the various DPL resources and services. Haley guided attendees through exploring the library’s online catalog, databases, training, and digital collection on the website. She also showed attendees how to check the website to learn more about DPL’s various book clubs, classes, and Discovery Kits; its wide range of genealogical information and reference materials; The Forge Makerspace; and even Technology Assistance for Seniors (50+). Additionally, Haley demonstrated how to access book recommendations and how to request that the library purchase a particular item. There’s a wealth of information on the DPL website!

When the dates are set, the Robson Library will announce the DPL Fall 2024 Visits on our website, www.robsonlibrary.org.
