The subject of immigration is a hot topic these days, especially in Texas. That’s why Voices United members devoted their September meeting to a discussion of the issue.

Members prepared for the meeting by taking a short quiz to test their knowledge of immigration issues, then listening to a number of recent podcasts on the topic and reading a book, several news stories, and the 2024 platforms of both political parties.

Members Jane Scholz and Donna Gardner assembled the reading list and prepared a brief slideshow to guide the discussion. Members shared their thoughts at the meeting on four main topic areas:

• Why talk about immigration now?

• Who are the immigrants in the U.S.?

• Who’s right about the impact of immigrants on crime, jobs, and the cost of immigrants (mostly educating those of school age) to state and local governments?

• What should be done about this?

The club devoted about 90 minutes to a vigorous discussion of these issues.
