Members of Voices United gather for their Festivus celebration.
Dianne Ace
The members of Voices United met at the home of Jane Thompson on the beautiful morning of Sept. 20 to celebrate Festivus. Many of you might wonder what Festivus is. Festivus was introduced to the public by way of the Seinfeld TV show. It is a made-up holiday, usually celebrated on Dec. 23, as an alternative to Christmas and its consumerism. Since it is a made-up holiday, Voices members could see no reason why it couldn’t be celebrated in September.
This version of Festivus involved food and gifts. What could be better? After enjoying brunch, the members gathered together to bid on mystery items, which were donated by the members. Vickie McDonald was the auctioneer and encouraged the bidding with hints and teasing comments. The gifts ranged from fall decorations to fashion accessories and even an original painting. There was also a gift that was perfect for a Cat Lady.
The money raised will go towards more fun parties, which are organized by the Social Committee. This month members will be treated to a Halloween Party. If you would like to learn more about Voices United, go to www.voicesunitedrr.org.
