At the February meeting of Voices United, Tiffany Ramzey, a member of the group, spoke to the members about the CROWN Act. As Tiffany explained, the CROWN Act was created in 2019 by Dove and the CROWN Coalition, in partnership with then-State Senator Holly J. Mitchell of California, to protect against discrimination based on race-based hairstyles.

She explained how the CROWN Act is a crucial step in furthering cultural diversity and acceptance as it sets out to protect people of color from discriminatory practices that are entrenched in our society, particularly in schools and workplaces. Texas passed the CROWN Act in 2023. A total of 27 states have passed the Act.

The CROWN Act criminalizes the targeting of hairstyles associated with race and prevents employers, educators, and others from imposing stringent policies related to physical appearance. Eighty percent of Black women have had to change their hair from natural styles to fit in at work or school. Processing hair is not only expensive and damaging but can potentially cause cancer.

Voices United is a non-partisan group of Robson Ranch women who share progressive values, perform community outreach, provide civic awareness and social contact for members, and have a good time! We’re a 501(c)(3) group. Our annual dues are $25.
