It must be Thursday or Sunday evening because it is now water volleyball time. The indoor pool has a siren call to the group of individuals that come here to play a water sport where it is possible for everyone to get involved and have fun. The main rule is to have fun, but there are some serious rules too. You play with a beach ball, but you have to have two players touch it on your side of the net before it can go back over to the other side. You think this is easy, but it is harder than you think because your instinct will kick in and want to hit the ball back over the net before two people touch the ball. The beach ball is also harder because the valve gives the ball a weighted side so if you hit the ball normally it will go astray. So you have to become accustomed to the nuances of the ball, adjust your angle and respond accordingly. Some of the players are sort of like alligators where they just lie at water level until the ball comes to them, and then they lash out for a quick return. Others are like seals frolicking in the water bouncing a ball or laughing and carrying on. Others never get their hair wet. These are the serious types who calculate the energy needed to return the ball and never expend extra energy while they await the ball’s return. Every type of player seems to be a part of the cadre of players that show up each week to fill out the team roster. The only thing everyone has in common is the enjoyment each person feels when they play. So if you are looking for a fun wet sport where everyone gets to be part of the team, go to the indoor pool on Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. or Sunday at 5:00 p.m. Two things: be prepared to have a whole lot of fun and get really wet.
