When we moved to Robson Ranch, I followed the lead of so many that had already moved here. I signed up for many volunteer activities. One of those was the After Schoolers group that provides support to teachers at Borman Elementary and LaGrone Advanced Technology Complex. From the proceeds of our fundraisers (two garage sales each year) the After Schoolers are able to give the teachers money to help purchase supplies or to use as they see fit. In addition, After Schoolers provide special teacher lunches and food baskets and gifts for the students.
The first couple of years I did my little bit in helping the group with its garage sales (to support teachers at Borman Elementary and LaGrone Advanced Technology in Denton). I never realized that my “little bit” was a really “big bit” until I joined the board. I looked out over our group at a meeting recently. So many had volunteered for various jobs. These are the people who create successful garage sales. At that point I realized that each “little bit” of many volunteers really is a “big bit.”
Why do this? Of course, we all realize the importance of education for the children. We also realize how hard the teachers work to provide this education. We are also rewarded richly in the appreciation we receive from the teachers. At our meetings we share these letters and thank you notes. This is one of the very special “thank you” notes we received from Ms. Emily McLarty, Principal of Borman Elementary School.
“Dearest After Schoolers!
I wish that you could have seen the delighted faces and heard the cheers of gratitude from the staff of Borman Elementary the day that we passed out the gift bags from your wonderful organization. As you know, the beginning of the year is so exciting for teachers…such a time of anticipation and eagerness. It is also an expensive time for teachers, as new classroom supplies are purchased to begin the year. Your gift lifted the burden for so many of our staff members. I had a teacher come to me with tears in her eyes, letting me know that it was really a difference maker for her as a single mom. Our teachers give so much every day; you giving so generously to them means the world.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
Emily McLarty
Principal
Borman Elementary”
This is what keeps us doing what we are doing. If you are interested in participating in the After Schoolers, we have a monthly meeting the second Friday of each month in the clubhouse.
