Wild About Champions!

Ana Corey, Publicity Chair

There are many definitions for the word “wild”: “not ordinarily tame,” “not subject to restraint or regulation,” “emotionally overcome,” “passionately eager or enthusiastic,” and “going beyond normal or conventional bounds.” So, to use the word “wild” when describing the RRWGA Champions tournament is appropriate. The two-day tournament held on Sept. 29 and 30 was a truly wild event. The first day’s scores were considered wildly out of character by many of the players, as the elements and the golf gods seemed untamable. But perseverance prevailed on the second day as scores improved and the players’ passionate enthusiasm took hold.

At the end of the day, one player stood alone as the 2024 WGA Champion. Kerri Kay, for the second year in a row, went above and beyond to stand out above the rest. Shannon Dunson took home the Robson Cup Champion. She was emotionally overcome, as she and her father Ted Dunson were both Cup Champs. Joyce Marshall was the Silver Cup Champion, repeating her wild and winning ways. Tee markers will be placed on the number 1 hole of each nine to recognize the winners.

The following players were also in the money: Flight 1: First Gross Ruth Lowe, Second Gross Jayne Gornik, First Net Sue Galinski, Second Net Marlene Womack; Flight 2: First Gross Diane Bent, Second Gross Jan Henson, First Net Mary Burke, Second Net Pat Sands; Flight 3: First Gross Paula Difonzo, Second Gross (tie) Sue Clearfield and Connie Metzler, First Net Sue Halsted, Second Net Lea Ann Kirby; Flight 4: First Gross Gabe Bull, Second Gross Linda Knightly, First Net Karen Tindal, Second Net Bonnie Kohnert.

Eleven past champions attended the luncheon, who did not compete this year, including the first champion Sonja Reed (2003), as well as our all-time champion Paula Bull who won seven times (once in 2009 and then six in a row from 2011 to 2016), Alice Wright who won consecutively 2017 to 2019, Nancy Estes, Althea Parent, Nancy Freisheim, Sheri Watkins, Betty Lou Knowles, Maureen Lehrer, and Ladonna Womochel. Six of our champions competed again this year: Kerri Kay, Joyce Marshall, Diane Bent, Pat Sands, Connie Metzler, and Gabie Bull.

Once again, Ann Brehm took the reins with enthusiasm, going beyond the conventional bounds to put on a wonderful tournament. Her passion was evident as all attendees enjoyed the Champagne Celebration and luncheon. She and Kelly Kay, along with photographer LeaAnn Kirby, put together a wonderful PowerPoint presentation.

We would like to thank our sponsors: Robson Ranch New Home Sales, WGA Realtors including Kerri Kay (All City Real Estate) Ann Brehm (Coldwell Banker Realty), Rose Depoe (Keller Williams Realty), and Barbara Arden, a WGA member celebrating her Jubilee birthday.

The event next year is sure to be a repeat of the passion and enthusiasm, both on the course and off, as the RRWGA sure knows how to get wild and crazy!
