Monsieur et madame Newcomer welcomed the Wine Knots group on Friday, February 17, with a French flare. Chuck and Joan gave us detailed background information on the two wines they chose for the tasting. The first wine was a white “Loire Valley-Sauvion Vouvray 2015.” The nose featured floral and ripe fruit notes veering towards notes of honey and dried fruit. The white grapes for this wine are Chenin Blanc. The second wine was a red “Louis Bernard Cotes du Rhone Villages 2013.” The palate is complex and well balanced with notes of spices and licorice with smooth tannins. The Cotes du Rhone wines are based mostly on Grenache.
The evening was topped off with more wine and “delicieux” food including salmon with béarnaise sauce, French onion meatballs, French onion mushrooms, fig and brie bites, mini French cheese balls, hot chicken dip, ham wrapped asparagus and apple French toast bake. It was like going to a five-star French restaurant with great company!
