Randy Johnston
The monthly get together was at Randy and Debbie Johnston’s residence on Friday, April 21. The theme was Texas wine from the Grape Creek Vineyards in Fredericksburg, Texas. The statement of the night was “licorice and leather,” don’t knock it until you try it!
That statement came after sampling a bottle of 2014 Serendipity red. This wine is 60 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 18 percent Merlot, 16 percent Syrah, and six percent Cabernet Franc. The wine is a dark ruby and has a dense aroma of flavors including black cherry, black current, licorice with Mexican vanilla, hazelnut and “leather.” Much discussion on the licorice and leather, but the wine was considered very good!
The second wine tasted was a 2015 Pinot Grigio, which was a pale yellow white wine. It was a light and crisp wine with aromas and flavors of apricot, pear, pineapple and other tropical fruits. The group enjoyed this one also.
To top off the evening the group enjoyed pulled pork sandwiches, chicken enchilada dip, a dish called “Texas Caviar” and a TexMex dip with homegrown jalapenos. The dessert was a traditional Texas sheet cake that was a chocolate, pecan and buttermilk mix.
Great time, and the storms stayed away!
