While the Wildhorse Lady Niners (WLN) have the reputation for being a “just for fun” golf group, we do strive to play golf correctly. To attain that goal, we offer as much education as possible to our members. New to the Niners this year, thanks to the collective effort of the Play Day Committee, is a program called “Making Finer Niners.”
In October, we held the first session and talked about rules of golf. Forty ladies brought their questions to guest educators Dave Hintz and Valerie Bottoms who both work in our Pro Shop. Playday Chair Lucia Bone served as the moderator. Participants enjoyed their choice of mimosas or Bloody Marys and light snacks.
Questions were often specific to our course, with a great number of questions about the double ditches on Two South. “My ball went into the ravine: How many times do I have to hit again before I can go around and drop on the other side?” Because of this question, Dave was able to add a new drop zone near the base of the bunker by the green on that hole. This change takes some of the stress off golfers who find hitting over the ravines particularly difficult. Now, if golfers hit into the ravine, they can add a stroke to their score and drop from the drop zone on the other side.
The next Making Finer Niners was held on Nov. 8 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. This program focused on using Chelsea and GHIN. WLN members received an invitation via Golf Genius prior to the event.
