Bob Grames in front of some American hardwoods in the woodshop
Lorraine Wilson
Wood is essential to every project in the woodshop, and a small group of dedicated members ensures there is always a supply on hand. These members regularly travel to suppliers such as Brazos Forest Products in Grapevine and Central Hardwoods in Irving to select and purchase unfinished American hardwoods for use in the shop.
The wood they bring back includes a range of hardwoods commonly used in woodworking projects. Walnut, cherry, maple, mahogany, and poplar are among the types of wood most frequently chosen for their durability and appearance.
Members who take part in these lumber runs include Dave Popejoy, Larry Ditch, Mike Inderhees, Greg Kohn, Scott Lebsack, Bob Grames, Ray Alvey, and Larry Daniels. Their efforts are a key part of keeping the shop well-stocked and ready for use by all woodworkers.
Club members may purchase wood at the shop’s cost for use in their personal projects. While these items cannot be sold, they may be kept by the member or given as gifts to family, friends, or neighbors. Members are also encouraged to use shop materials to create pieces for the woodshop’s display window or for the annual Holiday Market held each fall. Items made for the shop may be sold, with proceeds going toward essential expenses such as maintenance of equipment, lumber, glue, sandpaper, saw blades, replacement parts, and replacement of powered equipment.
Come by the Creative Arts building to view the beautiful, handmade items made by the talented and creative members of the Woodworkers Club. Items can be purchased whenever the shop is open and a monitor is on duty—usually Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday mornings.
