The 14th annual golf tournament was held September 7 – 9 at Wildhorse Golf Course at Robson Ranch Texas. One hundred forty-four golfers, 72 Teams comprised of an RRMGA member and a guest participate. The tournament held with three days of weather that could only be called “perfect” golf weather.
The event began on Thursday, September 7, with a practice round of golf so guests could tune up their game and play our beautiful golf course. A Titleist Demo Day was held on the driving range 2:00-5:00 p.m. Player registration was held that evening when all participants were given a gift bag that included: tournament golf cap, custom engraved MGA logo bag tag, divot tool with MGA logo tournament ball markers, logo golf balls and other sponsor gifts as well as a $100 certificate for use in the Titleist/FootJoy Remote Pro-Shop.
Friday began with a breakfast buffet on the Grill patio at which time the formal welcome to all participants and guests was made by David Thatcher, and the tournament format and scoring was explained by tournament co-chair Lawry Cohen followed by a shotgun start at 9:00 a.m.
Tournament format for both days was the following: Flights were determined by the team handicaps with a total of six flights for the tournament; quota points were assigned for each team based on total team handicaps. Points earned were one point for a bogey, two points for par, three points for a birdie, four points for an eagle and five points for a double eagle.
On both days of the tournament there were hole-in-one contests: hole No. 4 was for a new Club Car Golf Cart, hole No. 7 was for a Cadillac SUV, hole No. 11 was for a Chrysler Pacifica.
Also both days there was a long drive contest by each flight on hole No. 8 and closest-to-the-pin by flight on hole No. 14
While the guys played golf on Friday, a fashion show directed by Katherine Vess was provided for the spouses and significant others of the participants of the tournament. Also the show included lunch.
Following play on Friday a scoring party was held on the Grill patio with food and refreshments. There was a chipping contest for the players, and for the ladies a “Putting for Diamonds” contest. Wow! What a great first day.
Breakfast Buffet was on the Grill Patio. A 9:00 a.m. shotgun start with the same format as the first day with point quotas adjusted for the first day’s results. It was another beautiful day for golf; the weather was perfect and the golf course was firm and fast.
A cocktail party reception was held from 6:00-7:00 p.m. and at 6:50 p.m. the finals of the ladies “Putting for Diamonds,” sponsored by Scott Electric, was held. Finalists were Debbie Reed, OkCha Cummings and Mary Ann Starr. The winner of the diamond earrings was Mary Ann Starr.
Joe Cooper, MGA President, recognized the many sponsors of the tournament and along with Lawry Cohen and Glenn Headley presented awards to our major sponsors in recognition of their generous participation in making the event the success that it was. Special recognition was given to Robson Communities for their 14 consecutive years of support of our premier annual tournament.
Musical entertainment, provided by The Vic Duncan Band for the attendees’ listening and dancing pleasure, was enjoyed from 6:00 p.m. to the close of the evening. Also an “after party” was held on the Grill patio from 9:30 to 11:00 p.m. with entertainment provided by Belinda B.
A wonderful dinner prepared by the Wildhorse Grill of salad, prime rib and chicken plus a dessert of either peach or blackberry cobbler was enjoyed by all.
